Observing Martin Luther King Day in anti-nuclear New Zealand with a ringing of the World Peace Bell in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
A few minutes at the Christchurch World Peace Bell, unveiled here in 2006, brought to mind a quote by Dr. King, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and was killed by a gun in 1968: “By our readiness to allow arms to be purchased at will and fired at whim, by allowing our movie and television screens to teach our children that the hero is one who masters the art of shooting and the technique of killing, by allowing all these developments, we have created an atmosphere in which violence and hatred have become popular pastimes.”

Joel Stratte-McClure has been a global trekker since the 1970s. He lived in France for over 30 years, working as a journalist, before he turned his attention to a unique life-time-project of walking the shores of the Mediterranean.
