Why Is The Idiot Shopping In France For A Dinner In Los Angeles?

The Idiot, who has hired author/chef Martha Shulman to prepare an exquisite meal celebrating the conclusion of his twenty-year walk around the Mediterranean Sea in Los Angeles next weekend, decided to make a quick trip to France to pick up a few tasty side dishes (think confit de canard, escargots à la Caudéranaise, les cèpes de Bordeaux, noisettines du Medoc and truffles).

That’s how he found himself drinking coffee and shopping for colorful produce at the celebrated open-air Marché des Capucins food market in Bordeaux early one morning.

A morning outing at the Marché des Capucins always starts with a couple decent bowls of coffee and a pain aux raisins.

The Idiot, especially early in the morning, starts shopping by tasting and purchasing a variety of pungent and palatable cheeses.

After tasting and selecting cheese, The Idiot chose a variety of vegetables and fruit.

Paradoxically, perhaps, The Idiot didn’t choose his main course until after he had selected cheese, vegetables and fruit.

To brighten the table The Idiot chose a lively bouquet of flowers while shopping at the Marché des Capucins in Bordeaux.

Naturally the last thing The Idiot selected while shopping at the Marché des Capucins in Bordeaux was an appropriate assortment of bread.

Naturally The Idiot didn’t take any of his sacred purchases back to California without first having a long walkabout around monument-rich Bordeaux.

The Idiot noticed troops in the Place Saint Michel in Bordeaux.

The Idiot walked along the Garonne River and looked across the water to the Place de la Bourse inaugurated in 1749 as a symbol of transient prosperity.
