Taking his 97-year-old mother to dinner at a darkish Italian restaurant in Redding, CA, before he heads to Hawaii’s Big Island for the volcanic Christmas holidays.
The Idiot’s mother loves the San Francisco feel (think murals of the Golden Gate Bridge), the fine food (think a veal, scampi and shrimp combo) and the old school attitude (think well-dressed professional waiters who never introduce themselves by their first names and don’t, madame or sir, use yours) at Nello’s restaurant (where every woman receives a red carnation at the end of the meal) in Redding, CA.

Joel Stratte-McClure has been a global trekker since the 1970s. He lived in France for over 30 years, working as a journalist, before he turned his attention to a unique life-time-project of walking the shores of the Mediterranean. The first 4,401 kilometers are explored in his inspirational and entertaining first book "The Idiot and the Odyssey: Walking the Mediterranean." The next 4,401 kilometers are covered in the gods-filled sequel, "The Idiot and the Odyssey II: Myth, Madness and Magic on the Mediterranean,” published on Valentine's Day 2013.
