Practicing patience while driving in a slow convoy through a stretch of Northern California’s Trinity Alps on a road intermittently closed by ongoing forest fires.
Charred forests, smoke-filled skies, nearly 1,500 weary firefighters and the remains of 72 destroyed homes near Junction City, CA, on the Trinity River prevented any demonstrations of drivers’ impatience or road rage.
This stretch of road is open to traffic five times a day.

Joel Stratte-McClure has been a global trekker since the 1970s. He lived in France for over 30 years, working as a journalist, before he turned his attention to a unique life-time-project of walking the shores of the Mediterranean.
