What’s The Idiot done during the past week to prepare for his upcoming MedTrek in Turkey?
A combination of exercise, meditation, camping out, getting a last taste of American culture and food, witnessing spring, fire spotting, using foreign exchange and packing.
Exercise: Swimming, spinning and pumping iron at the local YMCA.
Exercise: Taking a 12-mile hike that includes both the Sacramento River Trail and Highway 99 in Redding, CA.
Exercise: Volunteer gardening at the arboretum at Turtle Bay in Redding, CA.
Meditating under the prayer flags at the Peace Labyrinth on the Sacramento River Trail.
Camping Out: Getting into a sleeping bag on my suspended deck to prepare for earthly mattresses.
Culture: Enjoying Arlo Guthrie’s stories and songs for the first time since I saw him at Woodstock almost 45 years ago.
Food: Having a parting pizza and carrot cake with friends at Mary’s in Redding, CA.
Food: Sampling a Mediterranean plate that includes hummus, Kalamata olives, cucumber, tomato, pita chips & crumbled Feta.
Witnessing spring during an urban walk in downtown Redding, CA.
Fire Spotting: Reporting a fire seen from my hillside home in Redding, CA.
Foreign Exchange: Introducing a nephew to various foreign currencies.
Packing: Selecting T shirts for my upcoming MedTrek in Turkey.

Joel Stratte-McClure has been a global trekker since the 1970s. He lived in France for over 30 years, working as a journalist, before he turned his attention to a unique life-time-project of walking the shores of the Mediterranean. The first 4,401 kilometers are explored in his inspirational and entertaining first book "The Idiot and the Odyssey: Walking the Mediterranean."
