Haze White, a New Zealander I met while MedTrekking on the Ionian Island of Ithaca in Greece, just reminded me how amused she was when I proudly displayed the copious variety of drugs that I carry around the Mediterranean Sea.
“I thought of you because I’ve just started taking a multivitamin every day,” she emailed. “And I recall that you had dozens of containers with vitamins that I didn’t know existed. I remember thinking that you had to be an addict.”
Haze is, of course, exaggerating.
To set the record straight here’s a look at what I actually carry for my joints, muscles, heart, blood and general well being. The mix includes fish oil, Glucosamine Chrondrotin complex, Magnesium, Niacin, Vitamins C & E, Coenzyme Q-10, Alpha Lipoic and baby aspirin.
Nothing too toxic.
- A vitamin junkie’s stash on the Mediterranean.
“I’d love to find a super vitamin to replace all this,” I emailed Haze. “Let me know if yours does the trick!”
Good food, I pointed out to Haze when we were in Ithaca, also helps me keep going while I MedTrek between 30-40 kilometers day after day.
“I frequently refuel on fruits and vegetables straight from the garden and pasta, pastries/bread, fish, veal, olive oil and ice cream from outdoor markets, delis and restaurants,” I told her as we slurped on a gelato during tea.
It's easy to find fresh food…
….go to a cafe that uses organic ingredients….
…..or drop into a restaurant on the sea.
“Actually,” I just wrote Haze, “forget all about the vitamins. It’s the ice cream and pastries that keep me healthy on the path.”
