The Idiot, who has a momentous appointment with the renowned Oracle of Siwa in Egypt on the Ides of March, was particularly attentive to auspicious and ominous signs while he hiked throughout Hawaii’s Big Island.
There were certainly no shortage of advisories pertaining to weather, death, drones, driving, parking, chickens, trees, grandmothers, sacred and scenic spots…and virtually everything else.
Let’s start with the weather and death.
The weather station sign was another reminder that The Idiot couldn’t control a coconut, much less the climate.
A tombstone in a burial ground seemed to suggest that The Idiot should bury FEAR. Other graves interred DESTRUCTIVE HABITS, HATE, UNFORGIVENESS and similar character defects.
Not all signs welcomed The Idiot to Hawaii and some gave him pause before he drove, parked, took a particular path or trespassed.
The message was clear at this property deep in the Waipi’o Valley.
No, The Idiot didn’t park here.
The Waipi’o Valley has the most creative signage on Hawaii’s Big Island.
A number of signs had an environmental or safety message.
A “Take Care of The Land” sign helps keep trees safe.
The Idiot obeyed the “Danger Keep Back” sign at Rainbow Falls before kicking off ten days of hiking on Hawaii’s Big Island.
Chickens are protected and…
….drones are prohibited in National Parks.
Some signs are simply educational or politely provocative.
The Idiot is encouraged to “Strive for the highest” before ascending “the sacred platform of the high chief Liloa.”

“Should Grandma Smoke Pot?” is apparently an important political topic in Hawaii.
Next week: The Idiot and Co. hike beyond the signs to beaches, botanical gardens, national parks, valleys, volcanos and waterfalls on the Big Island of Hawaii.
