MedTrekking can be a solitary, sociable, or standoffish undertaking.
The Idiot’s recent 796-kilometer walk around the country of Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, was a balanced mélange of solo hiking, MedTrekking with companions, and serendipitous encounters.
Meet some of The Idiot’s fellow MedTrekkers during the Cyprus outing.
Liz Chapin, who is in her third year of MedTrekking, joined The Idiot for over a month.
Michael de Glanville, a Cypriot friend of The Idiot’s since 1985, joined the MedTrek in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and his wife, Viola, sampled the path for a few hours.
Former London Times foreign correspondent Michael Knipe, who edited “The Idiot and the Odyssey II,” became, at 76, the oldest person to accompany The Idiot for more than 20 consecutive kilometers.

There were dozens of encounters, both on and off the MedTrek, with local Cypriots and foreigners living in Cyprus.
