Highway 1 along the Pacific Ocean through Big Sur, closed for over a year due to massive and mind-boggling landslides that destroyed the road and damaged bridges, is finally reopened.
Although there’s one spot with alternating traffic, the good news is that it’s now possible for The Idiot and others to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco on one of the most romantic roads on earth. And local businesses are up and running again.
Highway 1, closed for over a year due to landslides, is open again through Big Sur.

Large earth-moving equipment is still visible in work zones on Highway 1 along the Pacific Ocean through Big Sur.
The New Camaldoli Hermitage, which was completely isolated due to the landslides, is again accepting guests and serving its Holy Granola.
Tourists are again driving Highway 1 through Big Sur and taking photographs of the Pacific Ocean coast.
“Every business on Highway 1 through Big Sur was adversely impacted by the road closure,” said an employee of the Big Sur Lodge when The idiot dropped in.
But the even gooder news is that, despite stetches of new roadway, Big Sur is just like it’s always been.
