What Does The Idiot Find When He Returns To His Fire-Ravaged Hometown In Northern California?

It doesn’t take long to notice the triple-digit temperatures, suffocating smoke, ongoing wildfires and destroyed structures when The Idiot leaves the Pacific Ocean for his hometown in Redding, California.

Leaving the breezy, cool and refreshing Pacific Ocean in Humboldt County for the stultifying heat and suffocating wildfire-created smoke in Shasta County.

Running into smoke about an hour west of Redding, CA.

The Idiot’s view of Mount Shasta from his home in Redding, CA, at 7 a.m. on August 7.

It takes even less time to see some of the 1,080 homes, and thousands of acres of terrain, destroyed by the still-raging Carr Fire.

The remains of a home in Sunset Terrace, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Redding overlooking the Sacramento River.

A sign seen at numerous homes destroyed by the Carr Fire in Redding, CA.

The closed and heavily damaged Sacramento River Trail.

But the takeaway is the strength, resilience and hope shown by firefighters, first responders and nearly everyone else in the local community in the face of a sickening tragedy.

The Idiot’s brother Lars, who was born in Redding and killed fighting a forest fire 17 years ago this month, would be proud.

There are hundreds of homemade signs like this one on the streets of #ReddingStrong.

Homemade signs thanked heroes.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” is a prevailing philosophy in fire-devastated Redding, CA.

Firefighters from through the state, United States and world (think New Zealand) came to Redding to help fight the Carr Fire.

Many local businesses helped fire victims and one asshole who increased the prices of homes in a new residential development by ten percent after the fire is being asked to leave town.

Redding is staying strong, staying safe and staying hopeful.
