Incidentally, here, from the Acknowledgements at the end of the book, is how the current title and cover (the working title was The Idiot and the Odyssey III: Walking the Mediterranean In The Footsteps of Alexander the Great) were conceived.

“A special thanks is due to author and photojournalist David Douglas Duncan, who died in June 2018 at 102. When I arrived at David’s home in the south of France (where we met and were neighbors in the early 1980s) after completing the MedTrek in October 2017, David greeted me with a rough layout of the book cover with the current title. I immediately abandoned my earlier subtitle (Walking the Mediterranean in the Footsteps of Alexander the Great) when I saw the effort he made.”

Here is David’s original sketch:

DDD gets this nod on the title page of the book: “Cover Design: Author and photojournalist David Douglas Duncan (1916-2018).”

And here is the photo from Carthage, Tunisia, being used on the current cover of the book. It was taken when The Idiot concluded the MedTrek last October and was crowned as “The Idiot Emperor of Carthage, Lord of Many Domains.”

The Idiot’s MedTrek ended in Carthage, Tunisia, when he was coronated as The Idiot Emperor of Carthage and, naturally, exchanged his caps for a crown.
This photo is a leading contender for the cover of The Idiot and the Odyssey III: Twenty Years Walking the Mediterranean.

We look forward to seeing your concepts and ideas.

Please post them on the Follow the Idiot blog.

The next 4,401 kilometers are covered in the gods-filled sequel, "The Idiot and the Odyssey II: Myth, Madness and Magic on the Mediterranean,” published on Valentine's Day 2013. The last 4,401 kilometers will be discussed in the last book of the trilogy currently entitled "The Idiot and the Odyssey III: Alexander the Great Walks the Mediterranean."
