A climb up Castle Crags in Northern California on Friday inspired The Idiot to “plant” a drought-tolerant art-and-rock garden on his hillside backyard. Art and rocks, he figured, usually don’t need water and frequently don’t die.
The Idiot, who has hiked mostly solo for 7-14 miles a day during the year-long pandemic, was thrilled to walk with two different double-vaxed friends on the Pacific Ocean in Central California last week.
The Idiot took Baby Gaga, his 3.5-year-0ld granddaughter, and Baby Gogo, his 11-month-old grandson, on a pandemic break to a kiwi farm with a menagerie of wild and domestic animals in central California.
The Idiot spent the first week of spring in 2017 at the fabled Siwa Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert to consult The Oracle of Amun and get the inside scoop about Alexander the Great’s past and the future of his 20-year walk around the Mediterranean Sea.
William Shakespeare’s soothsayer might have urged Julius Caesar to “Beware the Ides of March” (and Caesar should have) but The Idiot has always enjoyed the 74th day in the Roman calendar. That’s because it’s between National Pi Day on 3/14, which is an important holiday for pi and pie lovers, and Saint Patrick’s Day on 3/17.
It’s now been just over a year since The Idiot enjoyed an adventure outside the United States. The pandemic confinement has resulted in the longest period he’s continuously been on U.S. soil since he was a sophomore in high school 55 years ago.
